Scorer: James Fenton | |
| 14 September 2002 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| A listless display from the Old Ruts saw them crash to defeat against a team they beat home and away last season. Warlingham started the brighter and went 1-0 up on 10 minutes. Billy Finnis then had a chance to equalise, but his effort was well saved. The hosts continued to dominate and scored a deserved second just before the break after a defensive lapse. The Ruts rallied at the start of the second half, but a third Warlingham goal on 55 minutes killed the game. Finnis went close again before sub James Fenton lobbed the keeper with 10 minutes left, but it was little consolation and the scoreline actually flattered the Ruts as Warlingham missed several openings throughout the match. | |

Scorer: Darren Knott | |
| 21 September 2002 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| A late winner from Darren Knott gave the Old Ruts the win their play deserved but didn't look like getting as they spurned chances galore against opponents they should have put away much earlier. The Ruts were determined to put last week's poor defeat behind them and dictated play, creating many opportunities but failing to convert. Keeper Steve Shaw made one excellent save to keep the scoreline blank, but it was the introduction of sub Simon Minihane on 70 minutes that proved crucial, his fresh legs making a difference in central midfield as the Ruts stepped up a gear. It seemed as though the points would be shared though, until Knott rose unchallenged to glance in an 85th minute corner and end Ashtead's resistance. | |

Old Rutlishians Res 0-2 AC Mondial
| 28 September 2002 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| A poor performance saw the Old Rutlishians slump to a disappointing defeat at home to bottom of the table AC Mondial. They gifted the visitors a goal within five minutes as Mondial broke the length of the pitch to go 1-0 up. And although the Ruts had plenty of possession after that, they failed to create many chances and just couldn't score. The game turned nasty in the second half with a spate of bookings, and Mondial deservedly wrapped up the three points on 85 minutes with another breakaway goal. Captain Steve Shaw was not impressed: "A shocking performance all round," was his verdict. | |

Scorer: Steve Berry | |
| 5 October 2002 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| Another poor start saw the Old Rutlishians concede a goal within the first five minutes as they slipped to their second successive defeat. But they responded well to that early setback and dominated the rest of the half, playing well and creating a few chances, with Piers Capper in particular unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions. Westside then went 2-0 up against the run of play after a goalkeeping error, but Steve Berry reduced the arrears just before the break with a terrific shot from Simon Minnihane's cross to give the Ruts hope. And despite sustained pressure in the second half, the Ruts could not find a way past the resolute Westside defence and came away empty handed. | |

| 12 October 2002 | SSEC Junior League Cup, R1 |
|
Old Rutlishians progressed to round two of the League Cup as they beat Ashtead for the second time in a month thanks to a late winner from Russell Nixon. With the score at 1-1 and extra-time less than five minutes away, Nixon's deep cross eluded everybody - including the keeper - and drifted into the net. Ashtead had started the match better though and played some confident football, just shading a goalless first-half in which the best chance fell to Paul Hull, whose header was brilliantly saved by the visiting keeper. Not to be outdone, Ruts keeper Roland Heal then made a superb save of his own from a scorching shot after the break. And spurred on by good performances from Steve Berry and Simon Minihane, the Ruts gradually took control and opened the scoring on 70 minutes when player/manager Ewemade Orobator broke clear to drive home a fierce shot. Ashtead equalised immediately afterwards, but Nixon's late show put the Ruts through.

House 2-3 Old Rutlishians Res
| Scorers: Richard Hayward, Maddy Orobator, Seb Senior | |
| 14 September 2002 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| Old Rutlishians battled back from two goals down to secure an excellent win over high-flying Little House, who were second in the league before play. A dodgy offside decision and an individual error saw the Ruts 2-0 down after 30 minutes, but Richard Hayward brought them back into it with a controversial goal just before the break. His header was punched off the line by a defender, but the ref decided the ball had crossed the line and awarded the goal, thus sparing the defender a certain red card. Driven on by good performances from Russell Nixon and Steve Berry, the Ruts played much better in the second half and were level on 70 minutes thanks to player manager Maddy Orobator's second goal in as many matches. He came off the bench to head in a free kick at the far post. Keeper Steve Shaw then made a brilliant save from a stinging drive to keep it 2-2, before Seb Senior put the Ruts ahead ten minutes from time after good work from Berry. Shaw then stood his ground to save a penalty hit straight at him and ensure the three points which delighted Orobator. "That was our best performance of the season," he said. | |

Ironsides Res 1-1 Old Rutlishians Res
| Scorer: Paul Hull | |
| 2 November 2002 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| A 70th minute strike from Paul Hull earned the Old Rutlishians a point from a competitive match, but either side could have nicked all three in a game of missed chances. The Ruts started well but were rocked on their heels in the tenth minute when Battersea scored with their first attack. Keeper Steve Shaw did well to parry a header onto the post, but the defence stood and watched as a striker turned in the rebound. Battersea proceeded to dominate the rest of the half but could not add to their tally. Shaw made an excellent block immediately after the break to keep his team in it, but after that the Ruts made most of the running as they searched for an equaliser. Steve Berry was denied by a smart near-post save after a lovely Ruts move, and sub Maddy Orobator somehow missed from two yards out after an excellent free-kick fom Hull. Steve Nicola then saw his drive turned round the post, Stuart Hawley fizzed a volley inches over, and at the other end Battersea missed a sitter to kill the game. With 20 minutes left, Hull cut in from the right and smacked a vicious shot into the net off the keeper. And in injury time, Berry was sent clean through by Orobator but the keeper made a smart block with his legs to ensure it finished 1-1. | |

| Scorers: Paul Hull, Russell Nixon | |
| 9 November 2002 | SSEC Junior League Cup, R2 |
|
Old Rutlishians crashed out of the League Cup when they lost in extra time to a side one division below them. After taking a while to settle into the game, the Ruts went ahead on 30 minutes after being awarded an indirect free kick in the area. Gabriel Cohen touched it to Paul Hull, whose left-foot curler beat everyone. Five minutes after the break Russell Nixon broke clear and finished well to make it 2-0 and the Ruts looked set for a place in round three. But sloppy individual mistakes were to cost them dear, starting moments after Nixon's goal when keeper Steve Shaw allowed a weak shot to slip under his body. Wandgas took confidence from that and started to dominate, and although they deserved to equalise on the balance of play they did so quite fortunately. Steve Nicola was harshly penalised for a foul inside the box, and when Shaw blocked the resultant penalty a scramble ensued before a Wandgas striker put the ball in from a suspiciously offside-looking position. Wandgas then had a goal disallowed and the Ruts spurned a few chances themselves resulting in extra time. A young Wandgas side had the greater fitness and desire for victory though, and it showed as they scored three more times to eventually run-out comfortable winners.

| 23 Novemeber 2002 | Surrey Cup, R3 |
| Old Rutlishians avenged their League Cup defeat at the hands of Wandgas two weeks ago by dumping them out of the Surrey Cup in the third round. Although the first match ended 5-2 to Wandgas it had been a close affair - going to extra time before the Ruts ran out of steam - and this latest encounter was just as competitive, despite the flattering winning margin. The Ruts were pumped up and came sprinting out of the blocks, going 2-0 up within half an hour as they took control of the game. Steve Nicola was the architect as he created both goals, first of all playing in Gareth Pryce for the nippy winger to sprint past the full-back, round the onrushing keeper and tap into an empty net. Ten minutes later Nicola beat his man in midfield and sliced open the defence once again with an inch-perfect through-ball for Steve Berry to run onto and score with a confident low shot. Maddy Orobator then had a chance to kill the game, but after glorious approach play when he held off one man and turned inside another to leave himself only the keeper to beat, he inexplicably crashed his shot against the bar. Wandgas could have made the Ruts pay just before the break, but they hit the post from close-range and Iain Worley hacked the rebound off the line. The visitors were more threatening in the second half as they sought a way back into the match, and their pressure told when they pulled one back on the hour. The Ruts had chances to restore the two-goal cushion though, most notably when the impressive Russell Nixon shot wide after a good cross from Berry. The game hinged on a disputed penalty awarded to Wandgas on 75 minutes. If they had scored the game was anybody's, but the striker shot wide and Pryce made them pay five minutes later when he made it 3-1 after a good ball from Gabriel Cohen. With time running out Cohen lashed home a free-kick earnt by good running from James Fenton to seal a deserved victory and put the Ruts through to the fourth round. | |

Old Rutlishians Res 6-1 Ashtead Reserves
| Scorers: Ben Barber (2), Paul Hull, Gabriel Cohen, 2 ogs | |
| 30 November 2002 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| Buoyed by a good perfomance in the cup last week, a confident Old Rutlishians ran amok against bottom side Ashtead as they took all three points in style. The Ruts were two up early on thanks to Paul Hull scoring a right-footed (!) goal and a Gabriel Cohen header from Hull's corner. They created many chances before the break - with Ben Barber forcing a particularly good save from the Ashtead keeper - but the Ruts could only add one more when Cohen's cross was turned past his own keeper by a defender. Another own goal made it 4-0 just after the restart, but Ashtead then scored in the right net to pull one back. Paul Hull had a free-kick tipped over before Barber scored with a close-range overhead kick for 5-1. Barber had the final word late on when he controlled Hull's chipped free-kick and fired home to seal a comfortable win. | |
| Battersea
2-0 Old Rutlishians Res
| 7 December 2002 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| Old Rutlishians could not halt runaway league leaders Battersea as they failed to make it three wins on the trot. Battersea took the lead on 25 minutes when Craig Lyle's attempted clearance hit his own man and fell invitingly for a striker to score from close range. Battersea then missed a penalty, but the Ruts' luck soon ran out when their keeper was injured and Lyle had to take over between the sticks. Gareth Pryce had a good chance and Gabriel Cohen forced a good save with a free-kick, but Battersea were generally on top and got the killer second on 70 minutes. There was still time for Lyle to make a terrific stop late on, but although the Ruts never looked like getting back in it there is no disgrace losing to a Battersea side yet to be beaten this season. | |

|
| 14 December 2002 | Surrey Cup, R4 |
| Old Rutlishians booked their place in round five of the Surrey Cup with a good victory over Epsom Athletic, although they had to work hard for it. The visitors started the better team and were ahead within two minutes following some comic defending. But it only took the Ruts 10 minutes to equalise when Scott Hawley was fouled in the box after a good run down the wing and Ben Barber scored from the spot. The rest of the half was a scrappy affair that Epsom probably just shaded, but after halftime the Ruts settled and took control. On 65 minutes Maddy Orobator was too big and too strong for his marker as he flicked a long ball into Barber’s path and the striker cleverly chipped the onrushing keeper for 2-1. Epsom were demoralised and the Ruts had good chances to extend their lead through Paul Dodd and Gabriel Cohen. They made the game safe with a third when Cohen’s inswinging corner somehow found its way through a ruck of players. Jon Dall then pulled off a good save in the Ruts goal before Gareth Pryce made it 4-1 late on to seal a home tie with South Park in January. |

| 21 December 2002 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| Old Rutlishians moved up to fifth place in the table with a good win over South Park, who they also face in the Surrey Cup fifth round in the New Year. The Ruts landed a psychological blow ahead of that crucial tie despite a slow start. On 10 minutes keeper Craig Lyle failed to hold a low shot and the South Park striker wastefully fired the rebound over. Lyle then made two superb saves when a goal looked certain before Graham Winter put the Ruts ahead on 25 minutes. The left wing-back burst through two challenges before cutting inside the last defender and firing past the keeper. The Ruts took control of the game after the break and should have scored again in the 46th minute. Steve Berry cleverly turned his man but his shot was turned aside by the keeper. Gabriel Cohen then forced the South Park keeper to turn his well-struck free-kick around the post before Alan Morley fired just wide when clean through. The Ruts finally got their second on 70 minutes when Phil Rea’s long free-kick was intelligently nodded across goal by sub Steve Nicola for Berry to control and shoot home from 12 yards. Morley could have made the game safe when Gareth Pryce put him through again but the keeper kicked his shot away. South Park gave themselves a glimmer of hope 10 minutes later with a goal following a defensive lapse, but the Ruts scored on the break soon after to kill the game. Nicola sent Morley scurrying down the inside-left channel and the pacy striker’s low cross was converted by Pryce from close range to seal the points. |

|
| 18 January 2003 | Surrey Cup, R5 |
| Old Rutlishians threw away a 3-1 lead to crash out of the Surrey Cup as kamikaze defending cost them dear. In a game where every shot seemed to go in, South Park set the tone by scoring with their first attack. Gabriel Cohen quickly replied for the Ruts when he ‘did a Ronaldinho’ as his 30-yard free-kick sailed over the ‘keeper’s head. Buoyed by the equaliser the Ruts played better and were 2-1 up by the twenty minute mark thanks to Ben Barber’s terrific scissor-kick. And it was 3-1 when Paul Dodd latched onto Steve Berry’s pass to cooly slot his first goal for the Ruts. But South Park refused to give up and minutes later they were handed a lifeline when the referee awarded a controversial penalty. The striker scored from the spot and the Ruts inexplicably caved, conceding two more before halftime to trail 3-4. South Park turned the screw on the shell-shocked Ruts after the break and by 70 minutes they were 7-3 up, with Dodd the only player who can hold his head up high as the Ruts totally collapsed. Player manager Maddy Orobator notched a late consolation but it
was too little too late. “The defence was made of sand today,
we were appalling,” fumed Orobator. |

| 25 January 2003 | EPS, R1 |
| Holders Old Rutlishians meekly relinquished their grasp on the Ellis Printers Shield as they were soundly beaten in the first round. Last season’s cup final victory was a distant memory as Wandgas dumped the Ruts out of another competition having already beaten them in the league cup two months ago. The hosts started well and were quickly 1-0 up after some slack defending. After having a good penalty shout waved away, the Ruts equalised on 25 minutes when Paul Hull curled a sublime 25 yard free-kick into the top corner. Wandgas turned up the pressure after the break and a free header saw them go 2-1 ahead. The Ruts were unable to respond despite the hard work of Gareth Pryce in midfield and it was soon 3-1 as Wandgas’ dominance told. A late fourth goal rubbed salt into the wounds leaving the Ruts with nothing but pride to play for this season. “There will be many changes to the team after that performance,” promised manager Maddy Orobator. |

| 8 February 2003 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| Old Rutlishians were held to a draw by a team yet to win this season as they conceded a soft late goal. It was no more than Crescent deserved though when a scuffed shot found its way into the net for 2-2 ten minutes from time. Crescent had started the better and hit the post before taking the lead from the penalty spot on 30 minutes. It wasn’t until the second half that the Ruts really got going and on 55 minutes Scott Hawley ran across three defenders before poking the equaliser into the bottom corner. Player manager Maddy Orobator then made it 2-1 following a good
cross from Russell Nixon, but the Ruts couldn’t capitalise
and succumbed to that late equaliser. |

| 15 February 2003 | SSEC Junior Division One |
With the first team not in action, the reserves took centre stage and moved up to fourth in the table with this victory over struggling Crescent Rovers. The Ruts totally dominated the first twenty minutes which saw goals from Paul Hull and Steve Berry put them in control. However, the sleepers disease surfaced again and Crescent hit back with two goals, both the results of slack marking and indecision. So at half time it was 2-2 and words were needed. Berry and Hull were electric up front and causing Crescent all sorts of problems, with Stuart Hawley pulling the strings in the midfield. Two or three easy chances were missed before Hull scored a special goal, waltzing past three defenders and the goalie to make it 3-2 after 65 minutes. Crescent never gave up though and it needed sub Paul Dodd to ensure Ruts authority was maintained. He set up Gareth Pryce for the fourth after 70 minutes and that should have been it. Yet a blistering finale was ensured when Crescent scored with a spectacular drive from outside the box to make it 4-3. Simon Minihane had a goal disallowed and Crescent had a good penalty claim denied so in the end a 4-3 score was just about right. |

Old Rutlishians Res 1-1 Little House |
|
| Scorer: Gareth Pryce | |
| 22 February 2003 | SSEC Junior Division One |
A gutsy performance from Old Rutlishians enabled them to play out the last 15 minutes with only ten men and claim a draw after Stuart Hawley was shown a second yellow card. This would have seemed an unlikely scenario after the first 20 minutes as they dominated the game and should have been out of sight by then. Centre backs Iain Worley and Piers Capper went close from set-pieces while Paul Dodd missed a great chance and Stuart Hawley was unlucky with a terrific header. But it was Little House who opened the scoring on the break and took a fortuitous 1-0 lead into the break. With Dodd bossing the game an equaliser was always on the cards and it arrived on 70 minutes. Paul Hull put Gareth Pryce through and the pacy winger’s shot hit a defender before looping over the keeper for a deserved equaliser. Hawley’s sending off shortly after put paid to any chance
the Ruts had of going on to win the match, and it needed some good
goalkeeping from John Dall to earn them a point. |

Mondial 2-0 Old Rutlishians Res |
|
| 1 March 2003 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| Old Rutlishians remain fourth in the league despite losing for the first time in four matches and can consider themselves unlucky to do so. After an even opening half-hour AC Mondial were awarded a very dodgy penalty and duly scored. 10 minutes later they had struck again and the Ruts were unfortunate to be 2-0 down at the break. The second half was one-way traffic as the Ruts threw everything at their hosts to try and get back into the game with Mondial content to sit on their lead. Graham Winter should have done better with a close-range header on 55 minutes and Scott Hawley brought a good save from the keeper, but Mondial held on for the three points. |

| 8 March 2003 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| Old Rutlishians punched above their weight to hold high-flying Westside to a draw and can actually count themselves unfortunate not to win it. Seeking to overturn a poor run which has seen them win just one of their last seven games, the Ruts were solid at the back with Iain Worley and Piers Capper protecting keeper Steve Shaw. Paul Dodd was only on for 35 minutes before injury forced him to depart and this was a real turning point as he was bossing the match in midfield. They still took the lead though when a 55th minute corner from Stuart Hawley was met with a looping header by Russell Nixon. And it could have been 2-0 soon after when Stuart Hawley struck a direct free-kick straight in only for the ref to strangely rule it out for offside! This proved crucial as Westside equalised on 65 mins and Scott Hawley then missed from close range after Paul Hull set him up. With time running out Simon Minihane released Maddy Orobator who charged past the last defender for a great one-on-one chance, but he fluffed it and the chance for a deserved win was gone. |

|
| 15 March 2003 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| A first-half hattrick from Scott Hawley set Old Rutlishians on their way to a first win in four matches. Hawley notched his treble inside 30 minutes and also hit the bar as the Ruts took a firm 3-0 grip on the game. But the match turned sour just before the break when Steve Berry and a Battersea player were both sent off after an argument flared up. With more space on the field in the second half there were plenty of chances at both ends. Paul Hull saw his shot blocked by the keeper after a mazy run from the halfway line and Andy Kemp’s effort was deflected wide after another surging run. At the other end Steve Shaw tipped a volley wide but was helpless on the hour mark when a free-kick was headed in unchallenged. Battersea then pulled another back to make the last 15 minutes very interesting as the Ruts continued to waste chances. And Battersea could have snatched a dramatic equaliser when a curling shot struck the bar and was hacked to safety by Kemp. Almost immediately the Ruts broke and Paul Dodd made it 4-2 with a brilliant chip from the edge of the area, before Gareth Pryce put the icing on the cake in injury time when he robbed the last defender and cooly slotted home. |

| A terrible second half performance saw Old Rutlishians severely punished as they suffered their worst defeat of the season. The match started evenly though and after South Park opened the scoring Paul Dodd equalised soon after with a well taken goal. South Park went ahead once more before adding two in quick succession to make it 4-1. But the Ruts showed good character by scoring twice more before the break through Paul Hull and Dodd again to wrap up a frenetic first half that was well balanced at 4-3. But the Ruts inexplicably caved in during a very one-sided second period and conceded five more as South Park totally dominated, running out easy 8-3 winners. |

|
| 29 March 2003 | SSEC Junior Division One |
| Old Rutlishians had a man sent off as Warlingham completed the double over them in a match far closer than the scoreline suggests. The Ruts worked hard and it was a close game before the turning point came on the hour mark. Gareth Pryce missed an opportunity when clean through and Warlingham took full advantage by immediately going up the other end and scoring. Ruts midfielder Stuart Hawley was then sent off and Warlingham soon made it 2-0. The Ruts didn't give up though and when Paul Hull's shot was deflected in they pushed forward in search of an equaliser. But gaps were inevitably left at the back and Warlingham struck twice on the break to take the three points. |
